Individuals suffering from mental health issues (PwPDs) face immense neglect, with a large portion—approximately a quarter of them—living without homes. Due to deeply ingrained social stigma, these individuals are abandoned by their families, leading them to face increasing discrimination and exclusion. Furthermore, the lack of affordable mental health services adds to their difficulties. This situation is even more dire for women, who endure greater violence and human rights violations on the streets.

To ensure these individuals receive appropriate rehabilitation support, the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court have issued important rulings. These judicial decisions have highlighted the need to provide a safe and supportive environment for those who have been homeless due to mental illness or marginalized because of family stigma and rejection. Accordingly, the Supreme Court directed the creation of comprehensive guidelines for "halfway homes" and "long stay homes" to ensure the rehabilitation and social reintegration of PwPDs.

Following these judicial directives, MVF worked alongside Nagpur Regional Mental Hospital NRMH for two years, focusing on rehabilitation and social reintegration. Patients were gradually released from NRMH and transferred to the MVF Rehabilitation and Reformation Center in Khapa, Nagpur, to aid their reintegration into families and communities.

Additionally, MVF has launched rehabilitation initiatives for mentally ill men and women rescued from the streets of both urban and rural areas of Nagpur district. By rescuing them from dire situations, these individuals receive comprehensive rehabilitation services, helping them rebuild their lives with dignity.

Our approach is inclusive: After receiving initial treatment at NRMH, patients are moved to our Mental Health and Rehabilitation Center (MVT & RC), where they are provided with the necessary support to rejoin their families and communities. This model not only addresses their immediate mental health needs but also helps restore their dignity and enables them to live fulfilling lives within society.

Achievements:

Until now,

- 4 joint bank accounts and 12 individual bank accounts have been opened.

- 4 beneficiaries have been successfully rehabilitated and reunited with their families.

- Employment has been provided to 2 beneficiaries in a poultry farm.

- 3 beneficiaries have been provided with employment for domestic work.

- 2 female beneficiaries and 1 male beneficiary have been assisted in starting a tea stall.

- A community house has also been set up and is now operational.
